The Descendants (2011)

Blue Hawaiians

Alexander Payne has a beautiful knack for finding humor and emotion from tragedy. "The Descendants", Payne's first full length feature since 2004's "Sideways", has plenty of both. George Clooney plays a soon-to-be widower trying to keep his family falling completely apart with grace and precision, while Shailene Woodley, playing his trouble making seventeen-year-old daughter, shines with a crass, heartfelt performance. It is Amara Miller, Clooney's ten-year-old daughter, that steals many of the scenes, and keeps the audience invested in the direction of the family. This film may be one of the finest showcases of talent this year.
