John Carter (2012)

My favorite Martian.
Going into films with expectations is always dangerous, and Disney's "John Carter" was no different. I walked into the movie with a shade of gloom, only to have it dismissed by Andrew Stanton masterful direction, and excellent writing from novelist Michael Chabon, and Pixar collaborator Mark Andrews. Taylor Kitsch, as the title character, turned in his finest performance since "Friday Night Lights", filling "Carter" with a well shaded emotional depth not found in many sci-fi films as of late. The Utah backdrop serves beautifully as the planet Mars, or Barsoom, as it is called on the planet, leaving the audience with thrilling imagery.
