Gary Ross starts 'The Hunger Games" out very strong. He makes Katniss Everdeen, played beautifully by Jennifer Lawrence, a whole, and very interesting, character from the beginning. Through the scenes leading up to the start of the games, you get to know her very well, and come to care for her and her cause. What you lose in this adaptation is the ability to care for the characters that surround her. When they are launched into the arena, the movie shifts into a somewhat thrilling action film that holds moderate weight. The danger is mostly at a distant through most of the games for Katniss, and when comes her way, she runs, or dispatches of it very quickly. So the the stakes never seem quite that high (I know. With the subject matter that sounds funny). "The Hunger Games", though thrilling and engrossing in part, didn't thrill me the way I would have liked.
