I was surprised by Carl Rinsch's "47 Ronin". While it wasn't a great film, it was an enjoyable, and not totally terrible fantasy epic. Sure, it has its problems: the dialogue is a little cheesy, the love story feels contrived, and despit the final battle being a lot of fun, the Ronin never feel like they are in over their heads. However, the main story is exciting, John Mathieson's cinematography is gorgeous, and the acting is above average in spots. Keanu Reeves gets the top billing in the film, but the story focuses so much on Hiroyuki Sanada's Oishi, that it is easily his movie. And he crushes it! Between this and "The Wolverine", I would call him the most under praised actor of the year. All in all this wasn't the worst way to spend two hours this year.
