John Dies at The End (2013)

Forked Up
I don't really feel that judging Don Coscarelli films on the same level as other films is fair. His films aren't really made to be good. Much like Troma films, they're made to be to be instant cult classics, and he's had a few with films like "Phantasm", "The Beastmaster", and "Bubba Ho-tep". Now, with his adaptation of David Wong's "John Dies at the End", he has done it again. Chase Williamson, playing the narrator, Dave, tries to play aloof, but comes off a little stale, and Rob Mayes, playing the title character, is just bad. However, Coscarelli's script is funny, and full of great one-liners, and his directing is fun, and very solid. The special effects are cheap looking, but they work with film instead of against it, because that's just the way it is meant to be. Not everyone is going to love this film, and they shouldn't, but I'll be damned if I didn't.
